Job Role & Person- Specification

The AfriLabs Community Manager shall be in charge of developing the community, guiding and managing the community, interacting and facilitating community storytellings and insights. The ideal candidate should have exceptional leadership skills, and be a strategic thinker to design and implement strategies to promote expansion of the AfriLabs Community.


The Director of the Community will perform these tasks in the following manner:



The Director of Community will be a brand ambassador for AfriLabs by exuding passion for AfriLabs and by articulating the kind of hub members the network wants to attract.

Organising and Hosting events

  • In collaboration with the events and operations teams, the Director of Community will coordinate both online and offline AfriLabs community events, city and regional events, creating a sense of presence and leadership.


  • The Director of Community, based on community feedback, will help to develop a course for the community that also benefits the AfriLabs network.

Recruitment and outreach

  • The Director of Community will lead the recruitment of new community members and highlight key member contributions to the community.
  • The Director of Community will encourage participation and discussion and reach out to members encouraging them to share experiences.
  • The Director of Community will build relationships with other shared value membership networks.

Community Support

  • The Director of Community will answer directly or by providing a forum, issues raised by community members. Frequently asked questions will be aggregated and constantly refreshed.
  • In collaboration with the monitoring and evaluation manager, the community manager will work with and monitor and document progress of hubs – their growth, challenges, successes and needs.
  • The Director of Community will constantly recommend, based on interaction with the community, research and insights, membership services and perks for community members and work with other departments to build partnerships for the services.


  • The Director of Community will play the role of conversation starter, rulemaker and referee in community debates and forums.

Metrics reporting

  • The Director of Community will constantly share feedback from the community with the AfriLabs secretariat, making actionable insights that we can react to. The community manager will also work closely with the monitoring and evaluation and communications teams to create stories and visuals of synthesized information coming out of the community.


  • The Director of Community will be in charge of day to day details of running the community. This will include activity tracking, overseeing Community platforms, tracking, providing feedback, etc
  • The Director of Community, will ensure proper documentation of the community activities and members.

Well informed

  • The Director of Community will remain abreast of developments in the African innovation scene and work with other departments to align the community and corporate clients and partners accordingly.




  • The Director of Community will be liaison between the AfriLabs Secretariat and the community, whether it be planned or crisis communication and highlighting emerging issues.
  • The Director of Community will actively participate on AfriLabs social media platforms.

Content creation

  • The Director of Community will constantly share exciting, fresh, information from the AfriLabs Secretariat about the community for amplification by the communications team


  • The Director of Community will interact with peers and influencers and attend events, shows, exhibitions which provide opportunities to meet with other industry players.


  • The Director of Community will develop strategies to ensure that inclusion of the various regions, language, gender and any other identified group in the community are taken into account.

Required Skills, Qualifications & Abilities: 

A masters degree in any field.

Professional qualifications are an added advantage.


Highly proficient with the English & French Language is a MUST.

Solid experience in leading or managing a community is a MUST.

Broad knowledge and experience in the Innovation or startup Ecosystem is a MUST.

A minimum of 8-10 years experience at a managerial level working in a similar role in a Non-profit organisation or developmental sector.

Strategic and analytical thinking skills.

Vast knowledge in community development and  management.

Project management skills.

Location: Remote.

Employment Terms: Full-time role.

Working time/days: 9 AM- 5 PM; Monday to Friday
